A Theology of Music vs. A Theology of Religion

Recently, listening to Abigail Washburn, I have begun to articulate a theology of music with those around me.  Washburn, in her newest album, seems to be combining eastern and western musical motifs in her music.  In similiar fashion, Dave Matthews took a trip to Africa to learn more about music.  We all have musical influences and music junkies (like myself) are always looking to new things for more musical inspiration.

It almost always seems that music only works with some kind of syncretism involved.

Christianity seems almost the opposite. We hear of missionaries going to places to tell others about what we already know.  Are the two polar opposites?
