As we near Easter, I think it is important to consider Richard Beck’s defense of substitutionary atonement. Beck notes that it has become somewhat of a “fad” to criticize this view of theology in contemporary Christianity, but, he argues, it is one of the historical arguments for understanding the mystery of the cross.
