Difficulties of Pacifism

Over at Experimental Theology Richard Beck wrote some interesting thoughts on the difficulties of pacifism. I have given much thought to the ideas of pacifism along with how they tie into capitalism. Beck is really indirectly responding to some of Halden‘s thoughts on capitalism and western Christianity’s complicitness in such acts. I would recommend reading both of them. Beck has an interesting view that pacifism is not really an argument by a “calling.” The question for me really is how we can balance our lives in the West when we are so dialed into all of the technologies and things we claim to deplore.

  1. “how we can balance our lives in the West when we are so dialed into all of the technologies and things we claim to deplore” … I like your question, but I think in most minds it translates to “how can we rationalize our lives when ….”. P.S. Thank you for your comments … finally figured out how to get back to you.

  2. Hi Henry,
Yeah. I realized that the blog address was wrong in all my links. Today in my California history class we discussed a piece of literature called “The Octopus” where an author was decrying industrialization and the railroad. My teacher made an interesting comment.

“But don’t the farmers realize they are dependent on the train for their very way of life?”

    It is an interesting question.
